Substances of very high concern are a group of chemical compounds (including PFAS) that potentially pose a serious risk to humans and the environment. Flanders must now determine which substances can be regarded as substances of very high concern on the basis of criteria established at the European level. The concept note Vision of Substances of Very High Concern has been drawn up for this purpose.
PFAS is the collective name for more than 6,000 chemicals that include a combination of fluorine compounds and alkyl groups. They do not occur naturally in the environment. The use of some of these substances has been restricted by the EU since 2006.
